Raikkonen heads day two
Spanish GP – Saturday's first practice [03/05/03 - 09:46]
Kimi Raikkonen/McLaren
he first of this morning's 45-minute free practice sessions got underway in warm and dry conditions, for drivers to fine-tune their respective contenders for this afternoon's one lap qualifying stint. Pit lane opens for business and several drivers stream onto the circuit for their initial installation laps.
Antonio Pizzonia and Nick Heidfeld begin their first flying laps of the day, the Sauber driver recording a 1:21.652, almost a second faster than the Jaguar man. Heinz-Harald Frentzen is also on track, accompanied by his fellow German, five time champion Michael Schumacher. The Ferrari driver goes instantly into the lead with a 1:19.504.
Rubens Barrichello is also lapping the Spanish track and he quickly takes to second on the leaderboard followed by another fast lap for first place as Mark Webber slots his Jaguar into third place. Track temperature is currently at 23 degrees.
Raikkonen and Coulthard slot into third and fourth with Panis and da Matta in fifth and sixth while Ralph Firman slots ahead of Mark Webber and teammate Giancarlo Fisichella takes sixth.
A good run for Ralf Schumacher sees the Williams up into fourth behind teammate Juan Pablo Montoya. Pizzonia takes to the lead with the Renaults of Jarno Trulli and Fernando on their first flying laps. Trulli goes fourth and Barrichello improves his second best time but is una*** to knock Pizzonia from his perch at the top of the leaderboard.
Juan Pablo Montoya's session comes to a halt in the gravel in sector two, thankfully, the Colombian driver is unharmed. It's been a very uneventful session here this morning, apart from Juan Pablo's incident. However, it is thought that Pizzonia is running on a very light fuel load. Kimi Raikkonen takes to the lead in the dying minutes and Giancarlo Fisichella moves into eighth.
David Coulthard is now on a charge and moves into fourth as the session comes to a close, but it's his teammate's session, the Finn keeping his top spot on the leaderboard.
