So do please enlighten us as to why all these tobacco companies think it is good business to shovel massive amounts of their money into sponsorship? Why do their shareholders not revolt and demand that they receive nice fat dividends instead? What is in it for Marlboro to cough uop all that cash to Schumacher? And please do not trot out the 'brand awareness' mantra - that is just weasel words for 'sells loads of ciggies'.
Tobacco companies are very obviously not philanthropic bodies. Quite the opposite - they have callously and knowingly sold their dangerous products for decades and are still desperately trying to increase sales in the developing countries. They are not bankrolling F1 and other sports out of the kindness of their hearts. It is curious that Red Bull's involvement in motorsport has regularly been denounced as just a marketing ploy, yet we are not allowed to even think that tobacco companies are doing the same thing.
