It’s understood that the FIA will take another look at the matter on Saturday morning, when it will have the opportunity to gather and review further evidence.

The FIA takes an unsafe release in practice particularly seriously as clearly there is less urgency than in a race, and also more people are in the pitlane. The rules states: “If a car is deemed to have been released in an unsafe condition during any practice session, the stewards may drop the driver such number of grid positions as they consider appropriate.”

Ferrari also had a wheel issue in Australia, and one rival team has even suggested that as a result Vettel’s description of a “brake problem” could in fact be pre-arranged code for “loose wheel.”

Mention of the latter on the radio would of course have immediately alerted the FIA to the fact that the Ferrari had left with an unsecured wheel, and thus made the charge of an unsafe release a formality…

McLaren's MP4-30 - not such a bad car?
It is well known within F1 that McLaren's main deficit is with the Honda engine. It was said to be as much as 180bhp down on the Mercedes.

Applying a calculation for the lap-time difference made by engine power - which engineers say is about 0.016secs per horsepower - suggests the McLaren chassis may well be reasonably competitive, around the level of the Ferrari or Williams, the second and third-fastest cars.

There was a bit more to it than that, however. Rivals suspected that Red Bull had a clever way of running their car lower to the ground than others, for aerodynamic advantage.

The theory was that the front part of the floor flexed upwards under load, and the heavy-metal skid blocks prevented the wooden under-floor plank - there to prevent the cars running too low - from wearing beyond the regulation amount.

The FIA suspected it too, but were never able to prove Red Bull were up to something, despite great efforts to do so. But changing the skid blocks to titanium, a much softer metal, would ensure that it was impossible anyway.

Red Bull have slipped back this year. Much of that is down to their under-par Renault engine. But rivals have noticed that their car seems to be struggling more than usual, too.

Whether this is a coincidence or not, we are unlikely ever to know.

At Ferrari this principle could even be seen playing out live many times: whenever the switch was made from a hard or medium to a soft or super-soft tyre, Raikkonen’s deficit to Alonso was always hugely reduced or occasionally even overcome entirely. If it was only about their ultimate potential, the gap between them would have been unchanged.

Part of being a great driver is the ability to adapt to different car traits – something at which Alonso is masterful - and the difficulties Vettel and Raikonen had in doing this last year already damages their claims to true all-encompassing greatness. But that is not to say that such drivers cannot reach levels of greatness when they have what they need from the car – as Vettel and Raikkonen have each done many, many times in their careers.

Taip, faktas jau seniai aiskus, Tiek Raikis tiek Vettelis neturi pakankamai talento kad greitai prisitaikytu prie pasikeitusios masinos. Bet, sitas straipsnis nepasako vieno dalyko (arba nesugeba to suvokti rasytojas), kai yra geras sukibimas, tai prastesniam vairuotojui lengviau vaziuoti ir jis maziau atsilieka nuo gero piloto (softu uzsidejimas, etc.) Bet tikras talentas atsiranda tada, kai yra prastas sukibimas, kai masina taves neklauso, kai kietos padangos, kai slidineja ir t.t. Sitoje vietoje sugebejimai ir 'pasireiskia', kas yra tikras talentas o kas ne.

As kaip visada teisus, o dauguma pilkos mases atstovu, kaip visada, nesuvokia situacijos nes jiems emocijos uzvalde smegenis. Gaila tik kad tokie momentiniai protrukiai taip iskarto ir baigiasi - islindo pilypas is kanapiu, vemtelejo nesamone, ir vel dingo ilgam arba suvisam.
