"Williams had been holding out for around £10 million to release Bottas from his contract, with rumours that Ferrari thought it too high a price to pay for a driver who has had an unconvincing season."

Williams technical chief Pat Symonds has played down the significance of the change to start procedures that will be introduced in the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.

From this race onwards, drivers cannot adjust the clutch bite point after the car leaves the garage before the race, and they cannot receive any coaching.

While the intention of the change is to create mixed-up starts, Symonds insists that a well-prepared team and driver will be on top of the situation.

"I don't think it will make much difference," he told Motorsport.com.

"People believe that we make vast changes, but we don't, we make tiny changes. And sometimes those changes can be incorrect.

"With Ferrari sometimes, you win or you lose depending on what the mood of the team in general, of the group in general," he said.

"It's a very big team, with some good things, some bad things, and as I said it's good to experience and to live once being in Ferrari.

The big rumour on Saturday is that Red Bull has already pre-empted the outcome and given notice to Renault that it is terminating its agreement for 2016.

Reportedly, Red Bull gave its notice in the middle of last week, arguing that poor performance justifies the termination.

Renault is currently finalising arrangements to effectively buy out the Lotus F1 Team.

Enstone co-owner Gérard Lopez and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn have reportedly met this week and an agreement in principle has now been reached.

In order to seal its return as a works outfit, Renault would only be waiting for F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to make it an “historic team”, given the French manufacturer’s record in the sport. Such a move would indeed lead to Renault receiving a bigger slice of F1’s commercial revenues.

All the equipment belonging to the Lotus team was detained at Spa-Francorchamps on the order of court bailiffs.

Among the seized equipment are the black and gold F1 cars, with disgruntled former reserve driver Charles Pic reportedly demanding a €750,000 settlement.
