Before Alexander Rossi became the biggest somebody in U.S. racing, before he won the 2016 Indy 500, Rossi was a small little nobody in Formula One. He couldn’t get a full-time ride on that circuit, just some starts here and there. His first start came at the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix. Before the race, one driver — one — approached the 23-year-old Rossi and told him to enjoy the experience.
Fernando Alonso did that.

The word is that Ross was a busy fellow at the recent sale of Manor F1 assets, which gave him a wind tunnel model of a current car, without the expense of developing one. This was cheap as chips, of course, because who else wants a windtunnel model of a modern F1 car, unless they intend to turn it into a coffee ta*** or a garden ornament… I also hear that Ross is being very careful about recruitment because he does not wish to be accused of taking talent away from the teams – and so he is waiting for when good people leave (or are fired) and is picking them up as and when they are availa***. One name I have heard is that of Nikolas Tombazis, once the chief designer of Ferrari…

Indy500 prize money:


Sato earned $2,458,129 from an overall purse of $13,178,359 for his victory Sunday.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves, who Sato beat to the finish by just .2011 of a second, took home a prize of $770,629.

Rookie Ed Jones, who turned in a spectacular performance to bring his Dale Coyne Racing Honda home in third, won $535,629.

There’s lots of money on the ta*** at Indy, so it’s not just the podium finishers that get a significant injection of cash into their checking accounts.

Max Chilton, who led a race-high 50 laps Sunday and came home fourth, won $484,129, while Tony Kanaan rounded out the top five with $438,129.

Pole-sitter Scott Dixon, who retired from the race after suffering a heavy crash early on, earned $446,629.

Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, who ran near the front of the pack for much of the day before suffering a heartbreaking engine failure, earned $305,805 for his efforts and an additional $50,000 for taking ‘Sunoco Rookie of the Year’ honors. Alonso also qualified fifth, the best result of any Indy rookie, and led 27 laps.

Speaking to L’Equipe after Indy 500 qualifying, Hamilton said:
"Fernando, in his first qualifying, came fifth. Does that say something about [the level] of IndyCar? Great drivers, if they can’t succeed in Formula One, look for titles in other races, but to see him come fifth against drivers who do this all year round is… interesting.”

Tony Kanaan:
“You [Alonso] bought a lot to this year, you were hum***, not like your other F1 drivers who made some comments this month.
“What you gonna say, the guy [Hamilton] raced two cars last year and finished second.”

Former Sauber and Haas driver Esteban Gutierrez will replace the injured Sebastien Bourdais for IndyCar Dale Coyne Racing, debuting at the Detroit Grand Prix.

Bourdais is expected to be sidelined for three months after being injured in a crash during qualifying for the Indy 500.

Kimi Raikkonen didn't look to happy on the Monaco podium after Ferrari's tactics seemed to help Sebastian Vettel to victory - but there didn't seem to be much tension a few days later.

The duo were on the same team at a Juventus charity match on Tuesday night and looked to be enjoying their time together.
