Just marketing operation?

The German report said McLaren has calculated with GPS that it is losing 1.3 seconds around Montreal due to Honda.

Sportsmail understands McLaren will drop their current engine partners, Honda, after patience with the Japanese manufacturers’ uncompetitive and unrelia*** engines finally ran out.

The report adds that the move may cost McLaren close to €90-million and the deal with Mercedes, which is in the last stages of being finalised, will be announced before the Formula 1 summer break at the end of July or early August.

Klausimas tik kiek čia tas dailymail patikimas su savo naujienom, nes niekas kitas to per daug neaprašo. Panašiau, kad tiesiog čia visų sklandančių gandų susumavimas straipsnio pavidalu.

Beje, iš to paties gandų malūno - yra svarstomas variantas, jog McL bandys nušauti du zuikius vienu šūviu - kitiems metams susitardami su Mercedes dėl whitelabel variklio naudojimo (kaip kad Red Bull naudoja Tag Heur variklius...), o Honda tuo tarpu per kitus metus bando susitvarkyti visas problemas ir naudoja Sauber kaip testų platformą. O po metų pertraukos Mcl ir Honda vėl susijungia tolesniam bendradarbiavimui.

The driver market for next year was also a big talking point with Ferrari being the key over what happens with Kimi Raikkonen. If there is a change then the rest of the market will move. The current thinking is that Ferrari would go for Max Verstappen if he was a*** to get out of his Red Bull contract, which might be possi*** given performance clauses. The team had denied this but no-one believes the denials.

The word continues to be that a divorce in coming with Honda and it is really a question of when, rather than if. The replacement engines would come from Mercedes and some would like to see this happen after the summer break, rather than at the end of the year. Honda is not happy about the idea but to be fair to McLaren it has been pretty patient and Honda has not delivered the goods.

In part this is due to technical problems he has had but getting close to Nico Hulkenberg is what is required and the word is that Renault want to give someone else a try. There are some romantics who think that Robert Kubica might make a comeback in F1, but that seems rather unlikely and the suggestion for 2018 is that the team cannot afford Fernando Alonso, if he was interested, and that it may be more likely that Sergio Perez comes on board. This depends on what happens with Force India and Vijay Mallya.

There is, by the way, an undercurrent in F1 circles that the drivers could soon become subject to a salary cap, as teams look for ways to reduce F1 costs. This would mean a limit on what a team could pay a driver, but sponsors could no doubt provide additional earnings if they wished to do so.

F1 cost cap: €150 million including €100 million ‘participation fund’
…the notion of a cost-capped budget set somewhere around the $150m per season mark appears to be crystallising, although it’s far from being universally agreed. Under one model seen by F1 Racing, teams would receive $100m per season from Liberty as a ‘participant’ fund. They would then be free to source a further $50m from sponsors and other backing. Their total audited spend would not be allowed to exceed the notional $150m, with $10m ‘fixed’ as engine spend and driver salaries also bundled into that total. End-of-season prize money distribution, based on championship position, would be shared on a sliding scale from a maximum of around $70m, to a minimum of $10m.

He's consumed by driving and by cars, in a way that is extreme. His understanding of every facet of the car's performance and his drive to improve everything all the time - including himself - is remarka***.

If his driving had a weakness it was that it was too dependent upon a specific chassis balance which - as with Vettel - made him super-quick at his peak but prone to a sudden fall from the peak if the car or tyres couldn't give him that. In this way he was less adapta*** than Hamilton or Alonso perhaps, but with a different combination of qualities could well have been the most formida*** of them all.

Kubica, in fact, joined Hamilton's F3 team Manor for the Macau Grand Prix. The two hottest properties in junior racing at the time as team-mates. It was Kubica who stuck it on pole.

Valencia last week suggested we may not have seen the last of him.

Again it must be said he had little to lose – Ocon would try and do the Red Bull and if unsuccessful tuck in behind Perez – and he would have shown himself to be a team player. Not only to his team but also to team managers who may be considering him… Ferrari for instance.

The Reds need a team player in their books to partner Sebastian Vettel if Kimi Raikkonen does depart the team at the end of the season. Perez is an option, but I would venture he did himself no favours on the day because teamwork wins constructors’ championship s and that’s what pays team manager’s salaries.

Indeed I would even go as far as saying that if team managers do have a list of drivers they watch every weekend with a view to hiring them should the need arise, then Perez would have dropped a notch or two on their lists, while Ocon may well have risen up the list.

Porsche could be contemplating a future move into formula one.

The Volkswagen-owned German sports car maker has just won its third overall victory at Le Mans on the trot -- and F1 could now be on the horizon.

That is the claim of Germany's Auto Bild, saying Porsche has accepted an invitation to attend the next meeting to discuss F1's post-2020 engine rules.
